Vegetarianism is a way of living and an usual dietary practice in which the individual has a diet which completely or partially excludes any type of meat (including fish or poultry) or any other animal meat, the menu being only made of vegetables.
There are different types of vegetarianism depending on the menu:
- Vegan : which is the most drastic and excludes totally all animal products from the diet ( dairy, eggs, meat, and others.) the menu being made only of vegetables.
- Lacto-vegetarian : including fruits, vegetables and dairy products.
- Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarian : including not only fruits and vegetables but also eggs and honey.
- Semi- vegetarian : bedsides vegetables it also includes dairy products, eggs and white meat in small quantities ( chicken and fish) . However, red meat is totally excluded. One variant of the semi-vegetarian diet is the so-called flexitarianism which includes vegetables but occasionally also allows exceptions.
Other types of vegetarian diets are:
- Fruitarianism : which implies only the use of peanuts, seeds, nuts and fruits.
- Macro–biotic diet : which includes cereals and dried vegetables.
