The importance of sleep in the first three months of life

The newborn infant sleeps for long periods of time : around 17-18 hours in the first few weeks and approximately 15 hours per day when they are three months old.
However, they never sleep for more than 3-4 hours at once neither during the day nor the night.
Translation: you will neither sleep without interruptions. During nighttime you will have to wake up in order to feed and change the baby and during daytime you will play together.
Many parents are afraid in the first months that the baby might day in the bed. Specialists recommend that during the first 6 months the baby sleeps in a bed close to the parents’ bed.

Other recommendations include:
- the baby has to sleep on the back, not on the stomach or on one side;
- the room temperature must be of 18 degrees Celsius;
- make sure that the baby feels neither too hot nor too cold. In order to do that put your hand on their stomach: if it is too hot, take off the blanket, if it is too cold put another one. Don’t guide yourself following the hand their hand and feet temperature because it is normal that they are cold.

While some children sleep the whole night starting with the eight week, most children do not reach this moment until they are 5 - 6 months old or even later. If your purpose is to help him sleep without interruptions, you can organize a strict sleeping program ever since the beginning.
