A new study published online in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry sustains that the symptoms of Alzheimer sufferers can be improved by applying magnets on the patients’ brain.
The preliminary study, which involved just 10 patients, was made by scientists from Brescia and Milan and proved that this method helped patients to understand what is said to them. The technique used by Maria Costelli and her colleagues is called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, which is a non-invasive technique that involves the delivery of a rapid succession of magnetic pulses in frequencies of up to 100 Hz. The TMS was applied to the prefrontal lobes of the Alzheimer’s patients for 25 minutes at a time at a frequency of 20 Hz. Half the patients received daily doses five days a week for four weeks and half received a dummy treatment for two weeks followed by two weeks of TMS.

All the patients were tested for memory, executive functions, such as planning, and language at the start of the study, then after two and four weeks, and again after eight weeks. Tests showed that those who had the full course of treatment scored much higher on comprehension of what was said to them, up from 66 per cent to 77 per cent. The scientists say the technique is “specific to the language domain of the brain when applied to the prefrontal lobes” as did not affect other language abilities or other cognitive functions, including memory. The good part is that there was no further change after four weeks and that the improvement was still evident eight weeks after treatment.
Therefore, the study showed that magnets can alter “cortical activity” in the brain, readjusting unhealthy patterns caused by disease or damage, but it is not absolutely clear how the technique works. It looks that there are some proofs that people with congenital or acquired brain damage have shown that certain areas of the brain seem to be plastic and that cortical activity can be “reorganized” as a result. Besides, the authors conclude that their study is a step forward towards finding a therapy that could bring hope to patients suffering from a neurodegenerative disease. “The present preliminary results … hold considerable promise, not only for advancing our understanding of brain plasticity mechanisms, but also for designing new rehabilitation strategies in patients with neurodegenerative disease.”

Who is not glued to the TV for the World Cup going on these days? Millions of people who didn’t get the chance to go to South Africa for the World Cup are watching TV. Unfortunately, British researchers have some bad news for them. It seems that they’ve found every hour of television watched per day increase the risk of dying from heart disease by seven per cent.
The research was conducted by the Medical Research Council studied more than 13,000 healthy middle aged men and women in Norfolk, for over 10 years. 373 of the 13,197 participants or one in 35 died from heart disease, and of these deaths, 30 could have been prevented if the average person watched one hour of television per day instead of four.

It’s even sadder that the link between TV and heart disease was still strong even when lack of exercise, obesity, diet and smoking were taken into account. This means that watching TV was independently linked to heart disease and the effect is not simply due to be inactive while watching television. Dr Katrien Wijndaele co-author of the study from the MRC explained:
“Our bodies are not designed to sit for long periods and we should be aware that, as we put in the TV-hours watching the World Cup, our risk of heart disease is probably increasing. It might seem obvious that watching TV is linked to heart disease but it’s really crucial that we look closely at how our lifestyles affect our health in order to develop more effective ways of improving the health of the nation. This type of research is a crucial part of informing public health advice. We need further research to see if other sedentary activities, like sitting behind a computer or in the car, generate the same results. However, we chose to focus on TV as it’s the most widespread sedentary leisure activity where people have an active choice to dramatically change their behavior.”
But let’s give an example for a better understanding. For instance, if a person’s normal risk of dying by heart disease is 10 per cent, watching four hours of television a day increases the risk to 13 per cent.
The results of the study that have been published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, should be taken seriously. As we all know, most of us smile ironically when they hear about such studies. They think it’s a joke but it’s not. Such studies strengthen the argument that sitting for hours on end watching TV is not good for our health. Their goal is not to make us not watch TV at all. On the contrary, we should watch what we love on TV, whether it’s the World Cup or a soap opera. The important thing is not to transform ourselves in couch potatoes, to do at least 30 minutes physical activity five times a week, eat healthy and it will make a difference.

If in the past a tanned skin meant a healthy body, nowadays it is associated with the side effects of the ultraviolet rays: a higher risk of skin cancer, premature aging, wall-eye etc.. But it’s summer time, the sun shines bright and it’s impossible not to have a sun-bath, at the pool or at the sea-side. And most of us forget to look at the time and by the end of the day the sunburn reminds us that we should have stayed less.
Sunburn is an acute cutaneous inflammatory reaction that follows excessive exposure of the skin to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). It is generally classified as a superficial or first-degree burn, but sometimes, the sunburn may be so severe and diffuse that it results in second-degree burns, dehydration, or secondary infection. And unfortunately, there is no safe tanning because the tanning itself is a process of producing more melanin in order to protect the epidermis against the UVR. It’s true that exposure to solar radiation has the beneficial effects of stimulating the cutaneous synthesis of vitamin D and providing radiant warmth, but when the skin gets too much UVR, the side effects appear.

So let’s see what we can do if we’ve stayed too much at the beach and we’ve got a sunburn:
- Aspirin can help relieve the pain, itching, and swelling of a mild to moderate burn. Take two tablets every 4 hours.
- Drink 3 l of water a day in order to prevent dehydration.
- Apply yogurt to all sunburned areas to cool and sooth your skin. Rinse off in a cool shower, then gently pat skin dry.
- If your eyelids are burned, apply tea bags soaked in cool water to decrease swelling and help relief pain.
- Apply soothing compresses dipped in oatmeal water or skim milk for 20 minutes at every 2-4 hours.
- Start eating 4 carrots a day or take supplements of beta-carotene.
- Sprinkle talcum powder on your sheets to minimize chafing and friction and try to sleep as much as you can. You will recover faster.
- If blisters are present, don’t open or burst them. Keep the blisters uncovered if possible and use vinegar & honey remedies as well as antibacterial products to avoid making an infection.

There are plenty tips to treat a sunburn, yet some of them will not work on you, depending on the type of your sunburn and your skin. So, if you do not want to get there and try all kind of treatments for relieving your pain, follow the rules:
- Apply a sunscreen about 30 minutes before going out, even if it’s cloudy. Protect your lips, hands, ears, and the back of your neck and reapply after swimming or perspiring heavily.
- Take extra care between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. as the sun is at its hottest.
- If you insist upon getting a tan, do it very gradually. Start with 15 minutes’ exposure and increase it only a few minutes at a time.
- Wear protective clothing when not swimming or sunbathing. Hats, tightly woven fabrics, and long sleeves help keep the sun off your skin.

According to statistics, one in four adults sleep less than five hours a day and women are more likely than men are to develop a cardiovascular disease if they sleep less than eight hours a night. According to a study made by the British researchers from Warwick Medical School and University College London, not getting enough sleep leads to irreversible metabolic disorders in the female’s body.
The study has been published by British Daily Mail and shows that it’s essential for women to sleep minimum seven hours a night and to recover the hours of sleep lost during night watches with extra sleeping in the following days. The study has been made on 4,600 volunteers of age between 35 and 55 and half of them were men. The tests have shown that women’s body reacts differently because it engages an entire hormonal mechanism in order to compensate the lack of sleep. Their carbohydrate and fat metabolism gets unbalanced and this means there’s a greater risk of developing diabetes and stocking more fat cells. These irreversible issues do not appear instantaneously but after the age of 40.

Here are some tips to help busy women get enough sleep and thus avoid these health problems:

Give up the car and go to work by bike. You get to do two things at once: exercise and gaining at least one hour – 30 minute one-way and 30 minutes at return.
Share the responsibilities with your family. You don’t have to be the one who does all the work at home. Send your boyfriend/husband to do the shopping. Put some post-its on the fridge with messages like ‘Who cleans the gas-cooker gets a ticket to football match!’ and one of your children will definitely do the job instead of you. Thus you can win 30 minutes or even an hour.
Do two things at once: cook and do the laundry at the same time or go shopping with your children, having a parent-to-child talk on the way. You win two or three hours a week.
Give up ironing. Iron just the clothes you need and not the sheets. You win one hour a week.
Pay the bills on-line. You can visit your best friend or you can get a nap. You win almost three hours.
Prepare your clothes for the next day in the evening. In this way you can sleep more with at least 30 minutes.

Remember that sleeping less than eight hours a day causes irreversible damages to your body. The time you save can be used for your hobbies but especially for extra sleeping. It’s not a flim-flam, it’s a must!

On Wednesday, the volcano in southern Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull glacier has sent an enormous cloud of microscopic basalt ash particles across northern Europe, shutting down the airspace across the continent. Icelandic geologist Magnus Gudmundsson said: “There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. The activity has been quite vigorous overnight, causing the eruption column to grow.”
The World Health Organization warned Friday as small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway, that the microscopic ash is potentially dangerous for people, while some experts claimed the ash actually doesn’t have major effects on people’s health and its harmfulness is exaggerated, the Associated Press reported Monday.

World Health Organization’s spokesman Daniel Epstein said that inhaled particles can enter the lungs and cause respiratory problems: “We’re very concerned about it. These particles when inhaled can reach the peripheral regions of … the lungs and can cause problems - especially for people with asthma or respiratory problems.”

Nevertheless, other experts said World Health Organisation’s warnings were “hysterical” and that the volcanic ash was much less dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution. “The cloud has already passed over northern Scotland and we haven’t heard of any ill effects there,” said Dr. Stephen Spiro, a professor of respiratory medicine and deputy chair of the British Lung Foundation.
“Not all particles are created equal,” said Ken Donaldson, a professor of respiratory toxicology at the University of Edinburgh, who has studied the impact of volcanic ash in people. “In the great scheme of things, volcanic ash is not all that harmful.” Besides, according to the professor, most Europeans’ exposure to volcanic ash would be negligible and that only those near the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk. “Once the volcanic particles are in the stratosphere, they’re getting massively diluted because there’s a lot of air and other particles blowing around.” Donaldson also said that after previous volcanic eruptions, little impact has been seen in people’s health, except for those with lung problems who were close to the volcano.

Even so, World Health Organisation recommends Europeans to try to stay indoors or to consider wearing a mask if they go outside and not wear contact lenses. If people experience symptoms such as itchy or irritated eyes, a runny nose, sore throat or dry cough, or notice a dusty haze in the air or smell the rotten egg odour of sulphur outside, then they should limit their activities outdoors or return indoors.
The advice for people in northern Europe with respiratory problems, asthma, or cardiovascular problems is:
- Avoid intense exercise.
- Keep inhalers and medication with you.
- Avoid exhaust from heavily trafficked roads.

People should keep in mind these warnings and suggestions on how to protect themselves, because experts say things might get worse. The volcano has erupted twice in the past 1,100 years, once for more than a year. Each time it was followed by the eruption of the neighbouring Katla volcano, which is much larger and could cause disruption that is even more serious.

Cloning is the creation of an organism that is an exact genetic copy of another, meaning that every single bit of DNA is the same between the two. Human cloning is the artificial process of making a genetic twin of a person. Human cloning has already become illegal or restricted in a variety of degrees in several countries, thus scientific research has been significantly reduced throughout the world. President Barack Obama says human cloning is “dangerous, profoundly wrong” and has no place in society. Furthermore, there are legislations proposing the ban of human cloning, and a large amount of legislation proposing to allow human cloning. But why some people want human cloning?

Infertility. Millions of couples around the world suffer from some kind of fertility problem. So, rather than use donated sperm and eggs, people could use a cell of your own to give birth to “themselves”, their own twin. However, there are plenty of children in orphanages and foster cares that could use a home and family.

Recover someone they’ve lost, for instance the exact copy of their dead son/ daughter who was healthy and smart but died in a stupid accident.

Making the human race better: Selecting the most perfect genetic donor in someone’s opinion, whether it is from super-geniuses (e.g., Albert Einstein) or super-athletes (e.g., Michael Jordan), advances in science and technology would grow at an even faster rate and more people would be healthier. This reason is connected with eugenics, also known as the science of improving human genetic qualities. Eugenics was practiced around the world and was promoted by governments and influential individuals and institutions but then it fall into disrepute after having become associated with the Nazi doctrine.

Assisting Medicine and Medical research: We may be able to cure cancer if cloning leads to a better understanding of cell differentiation. It is said that parents could produce a clone of a sick child to provide bone marrow. Theories exist about how cloning may lead to a cure for heart attacks, a revolution in cosmetic surgery, organs for organ transplantation, and predictions abound about how cloning technology will save thousands of lives. However, this research is still in its infancy and requires a lot more time, effort, and money before it matures into saving a lot more people.

Taking a step towards immortality - Human cloning essentially means taking a human being’s DNA and reversing its age back to zero. Dr. Richard Seed, one of cloning’s leading proponents, hopes that cloning will help us understand how to reverse DNA back to age 20 or whatever age we want to be. Cloning would be a step towards a fountain of youth.

It’s spring time, the trees bud and the ragweed blooms and the human body reacts differently to all the changes Mother Nature decides to make. Immune cells release histamines, the chemicals responsible for most of your allergy symptoms. These in turn kick-start inflammation that’s intended to keep the allergens from travelling into the body. The inflammation makes sinuses, nasal passages swell, and eyes itch. Histamines also stimulate the nasal passages to release fluids, resulting in a runny nose and itchy throat, and cause sneezing, another attempt to send the allergens into the air to search another body. Of course this doesn’t happen to everyone, but if you’re one of those suffering from allergies, here’s what you can do to fight them.

A few drops of castor oil mixed with the juice of any fruit or vegetable, taken first thing in the morning can be a cure for different kinds of allergies.
The most trusted cure is lime juice with honey in water taken on an empty stomach first thing every morning. It helps eliminate all toxins from the body, and helps in fight allergies. But it is not helpful for those who have an intolerance to citric foods.
Remember that it is very important to change your diet. Add salmon or any other fatty fish such as sardines, tuna and mackerel to your to your diet because it helps balancing out the ratio of omega-3s to omega-6s in the body, which seems to have several beneficial effects on the immune system that translate into fewer allergy symptoms. Omega-3 helps minimize inflammation, a direct cause of most allergy symptoms, as an Australian study reveals that children who ate fish at least once a week were 80 percent less likely to have ryegrass pollen allergies, a common cause of hay fever, than those who rarely ate fish. Even if you’re an adult, you should have one to two servings of fatty fish per week. If you don’t like eating fish, take fish-oil supplements and so your body will get the omega-3 needed.
Bananas are a good remedy for curing irritations to the skin. It can also help when reactions occur in the form of digestive troubles and asthma. However, do not try this tip if you have a sensitive disposition.
Finally yet importantly, fill your shopping basket with the good old garlic. Make the so-smelly garlic your friend and they will support your immune system with their rich store of antioxidants. Researchers have identified a link between a higher intake of certain antioxidants and a lower incidence of hay fever. You can cut a fresh clove into several chunks and swallow them like pills for a daily dose and your stomach acids will do their job of breaking them down. As the garlic travels through the colon, it releases antioxidants.
Nevertheless, keep in mind that what works for one may not necessarily work for another. A universal cure for allergies does not exist!

Scurvy is in fact the vitamin C deficiency, one of the most serious diseases affecting teenagers, children and adults alike nowadays. Also known as Barlow’s disease, Scurvy can prove to be fatal if an individual does not get proper treatment.
It is caused by a dietary lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), a nutrient found in many fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly the citrus fruits. Ascorbic acid is important in the formation of collagen (an element of normal tissues). When collagen is made, the proline amino acids are changed to hydroxyproline, by a process called post-translational modification. An enzyme called prolyl hydroxyls catalyses this change. This enzyme requires a Fe2+ ion to be present. Fe2+ is relatively unstable, and will become oxidized easily. Ascorbic acid, a water-soluble antioxidant, keeps Fe in the 2+ form, and not in the more stable 3+ form. Therefore, any deficiency interferes with normal tissue synthesis.
Scurvy is also characterized by swollen and bleeding gums with loosened teeth, soreness and stiffness of the joints and lower extremities, bleeding under the skin and in deep tissues, slow wound healing, and anemia. You should know that the human body lacks the ability to synthesize and make vitamin C and therefore depends on exogenous dietary sources to meet vitamin C needs, so the treatment for scurvy relies on the consumption of fruits and vegetables or diets fortified with vitamin C. In 1746, James Lind, a British naval surgeon, established the fact that oranges and lemons were effective in curing scurvy. The incidence of scurvy among the British sailors sharply declined upon routine provision of lemon juice on board.
<img src="http://www.healthmedicalarticles.com/images/general-articles/citrus-foods-for-scurvy.jpg" alt="citrus foods for scurvy" / class="floatLeft">
So it’s very important to eat oranges, any kind of citrus fruits, olives, guava, green peppers, watermelon, papaya, strawberry, berries, kiwi fruit, mango, honey, mango powder, broccoli, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach and potatoes. Another effective remedy for scurvy is the use of aamchur, a popular article of diet in Indian houses, consisting of green mangoes - skinned, stoned, cut into pieces, dried in the sun and powdered. Fifteen grams of aamchur are believed to be equivalent to thirty grams of good lime because of its citric content.
Furthermore, the leaves of the Jaundice berry plant are anti-scorbutic or anti-scurvy. A decoction of the leaves can be prepared by boiling 15 gm of dried leaves in 500 ml of water until it is reduced by one-third. About 150 to 175 ml of the decoction can be taken at a time.
Note that vitamin C is sensitive to light, air, and heat, so it is best to consume fruits and vegetables raw, or minimally cooked in order to retain their full vitamin C content.

Remember! Adults need to consume around 300-1,000 mg of ascorbic acid per day and 50mg/day in case of infants to effectively treat the disease.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the world so scientists have been working extremely hard to make use of stem cells therapies to treat patients with heart problems. In fact, they are closer than ever before to achieve this goal, due to two types of stem cells.

Some scientists consider the mesenchymal stem cells, also called bone marrow stem cells (BMSC) that come from adults, not embryos. Unlike embryonic stem cells, is no risk of cancer or immune rejection because they come from the patient they will treat, and there is no risk of contracting infectious blood borne diseases. A drug, which consists of stem cells from donor bone marrow, gets injected into the vein. Then, the cells travel through the bloodstream and take up residence in the heart. The BMSC are supposed to form new cardiac myocytes and coronary vessels following an induced myocardial infarct (myocardial infarcts do not regenerate and eventually result in the death of the individual, even if myocytes in the surviving myocardium undergo hypertrophy and cell division occurs in the border area of the dead tissue). It has been already on mice and it gave positive results. Besides, numerous attempts have been made to repair damaged myocardium in animal models and in humans because the BMSC maintain the ability throughout adult life to self-renew and differentiate into cells of all blood lineages. These adult BMSC have recently been shown to have the capacity to differentiate into multiple specific cell types in tissues other than bone marrow.

The other option scientists are considering for is the angiogenic cell precursors, or ACPs, the stem cells whose normal function is to repair damaged blood vessels. When injected into and around the heart, these cells build new blood vessels and restore function to the damaged heart tissue. This type of stem cells are supposed to treat patients suffering from coronary artery disease (angina), cardiomyopathy, and congestive heart failure (CHF) and the risks involved are similar to those of a standard angioplasty or minimally invasive heart surgery (NOT open-heart surgery).
Nevertheless, these are just studies that are still in Clinical trials and they are promising because it’s very rare that the human body rejects its own stem cells.

It is said that home remedies are universal. Some say that our grand-grandparents shared the same home remedies, no matter the culture they belonged to. But this may not be true. It’s not about culture, but about what nature has to offer. The continents are different so nature is different too. So let’s see those differences.

In Japan, people with flu are drinking tamagozake (egg and sake) before going to bed to keep the boy warm and to help them in the early stage of a cold. Other home remedies for cold symptoms: grilled umeboshi (pickled plum) until it’s burnt, pour very hot green tea over it, then drink to reduce fever; mix 2 tsp of grated ginger and 2 tsp of sugar in a cup, and pour 2/3 cup of hot water in the cup (use fresh ginger root to make shogayu) to clear up a stuffed nose.

In North America, the Native Americans, the Menominees used the inner bark from native hemlock as a cure for influenza. They would also boil it and drink it like a tea. It is said to help by making you sweat and relieving the fever and chills. The Delaware Indians boiled the inner bark of Dogwood to make their fever-reducing tea. Also used in the same way by various tribes are the Willow and the Feverwort. Some used the bark, some the root, and some used the leaves to make the tea. Also known to treat flu symptoms are Rabbit Tobacco, Sage, and Wild Cherry.

The Scots were seamen and used for colds and flu Hot Rum and Pep (rum and peppermint) , drinking nettle tea and going for a walk to get sea air. Not mountain air, not any kind of air but sea air.

In South America, the ancient Maya, Aztec, and Inca cultures each developed sophisticated uses for medicinal plants before the Spanish Conquest in the early part of the sixteenth century. Now, the most used cure for stuffy nose is taking regular whiffs of a sachet containing a pungent mix of crushed garlic, broken bay leaves and coarsely ground nutmeg. They seem to believe that stinky things clear the nostrils.

In South Africa, natives used grind fresh garlic and in soups to create a cold tonic, they inhale a mixture of turmeric and boiled water to clear up nasal congestion, and for coughs they administer a potent cough syrup of half black pepper and half honey.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine recommends the herb astragalus by tincture, pill or even injection to boost the immune system and reduce cold symptoms. Pak fah yeou, which literally translates as “White Flower Oil”, composed of wintergreen, camphor, menthol, eucalyptus, lavender and peppermint oils, is used to rub backs and chests to relieve chest congestion and cough and under noses to relieve stuffiness.

People from Serbia used to make a hot caramel drink to relieve cough and bronchitis and Serbian tea (slowly melt two to three teaspoons of sugar; add a few drops of water, a cup of plum brandy) to treat the common cold and chills.
