Breast Augmentation

Medical Information

In case someone wishes to improve the shape and the size of his or her breasts, this procedure can be useful.
This type of surgical procedure is used with different purposes: breast augmentation, improving of the shape of a woman’s breasts after several pregnancies or improving the balance in the case of unequal breast sizes.
However, it is important to know that breast implants can interfere with screening tests such as mammography.
In addition, in case a woman decides to breastfeed it is important to inform a specialized physician.

Procedure:

There are different types of surgical procedures. An incision can be made either underneath the breast, just above the crease, around the lower edge of the areola or within the armpit.
There is also a newer and less used procedure which implies making an incision within the umbilical region.
The surgeon together with the patient will establish which is the more suitable method.
There are different types of implants such as silicon filled implants and saline breast implants.
Breast implants do not require hospitalization.

Frequent side effects:

They can include swelling and increased sensitivity, bruises or breast pain. Swelling may last up to a month.

Complications:

In some rare cases patients will deal with:
- Scars
- Shifting of implant
- Uneven appearance
- Wrinkling of the implant
- Hematoma or fluids trapped around implants
- Infection

Recovery:

A drain might be inserted in order to allow fluids an exit from the incision areas. Some sort of compression garment can be used to bind the breasts to the body.
The stitches will be removed in one or two weeks after the intervention and the patient will be able to return to her daily activities in just a few days after the procedure.

Results:

It is important to know that implants are not lifelong lasting and future visits to the plastic surgeon are necessary in case they need to be replaced or revised.
On an average, breast implants last up to 10- 12 years but this period can vary according to different circumstances.
Due to aging, implants can change their positions and in this case a supplementary procedure is required.
